Saint Joan’s International Alliance
Working for Women’s Equality since 1911
Our caucus here at the UN “Religions (Starting with Our Own) and Violence against Women” works to connect religious and social forces which repress women. Mostly but not exclusively Catholic, mostly but not exclusively women, we have worked for better conditions for women in education, employment, and the household, for an end to traffic in persons, an end to female genital mutilation, and to all forms of imposed gender hardships. In the church, we have worked to end discrimination as experienced in the gradual suppression of women’s early ministries as deacons, priests, bishops, teachers, and administrators of their own institutions. The oppression of women in the religions reduces the safety of women (and children) in society, in the workplace, and in the home.
