Like many an abused woman, the church is battered and bleeding from a wound that she fails to recognize. Many evangelicals cannot bear to acknowledge that spousal abuse is an enduring problem within our very walls. Both individually and as a faith community, we are ashamed and humiliated to admit the presence of such a problem. It is far easier to deny, to minimize, and to conceal.

The Law of Israel on Household Violence

If a man hits a manservant or maidservant in the eye and destroys it, he must let the servant go free to compensate for the eye. And if he knocks out the tooth of a manservant or maidservant, he must let the servant go free to compensate for the tooth. (Ex. 21:26-27.)

Paul on Power

Jesus insisted that his true followers must not “lord it over” others (Mt. 20; 25-26; Mark 10:42-43; Luke 22:25-26). It was the heathen, He said, who displayed this attitude as they grasped for power and authority. St. Peter too decried the practice (1 Peter 5:3) while St Paul wrote:

“I do not mean to imply that we lord it over your faith; rather, we are workers with you for your joy, because you stand firm in the faith. (2 Cor. 1:24)
